Everyday dental habits that make a difference

Small daily habits can help keep your pet’s mouth comfortable. Here’s how to start, and what to watch for.

Start small

Let your pet get used to having their mouth touched a little at a time, with praise and patience. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste made for pets — human toothpaste isn’t suitable.

Signs worth mentioning

  • Bad breath that doesn’t go away.

  • Red or bleeding gums.

  • Dropping food, chewing on one side or pawing at the mouth.

  • A change in appetite, or reluctance to eat hard food.
