Fireworks and loud nights: a calm plan

Loud celebrations can be frightening. A little preparation helps your pet feel safer when the bangs begin.

A pet owner sits calmly with her grey cat while a veterinarian talks with her in a bright clinic room.

Prepare a safe den

A few days ahead, set up a quiet hideaway in the calmest room: a covered crate or bed for dogs, a high shelf or a box for cats. Let your pet get used to it before the noisy night.

On the night

  • Walk dogs before dark and keep cats indoors.

  • Close windows and curtains, and play soft music or the TV to mask sudden bangs.

  • Stay calm and let your pet choose where to hide — don’t coax them out.

  • Check that microchip details and ID tags are up to date in case of an escape.

Talk to us early

If noise has upset your pet before, get in touch a few weeks ahead. We can talk through longer-term support and whether anything else might help.

This article is general guidance, not a diagnosis. If you’re worried about your pet, please call the practice.
